The Glory of God*

Living,
I breathe in
the
nature
of
God.

It is all around me,
as His heart beats
in blades of grass
beneath my bare feet on a cool summer night
in gathered kin
around the table sharing a sumptuous meal
in falling snow
blanketing this world, desperate for rest;
for
if I breathe it not there,
there is no glory.

If I breathe it not there,
there is only
a death march
of
one…

me
being
me.

* With thanks to the Goettmans for quoting Saint Irenaeus of Lyons in their book, Healing the Illnesses of the Soul: Ancient Wisdom on the Passions and the Transformation of the Heart: “The Glory of God is the Living Man.”
