Giving

a long time ago,
a homeless man asked
if I could spare some change.

I barked, “I’m sorry, I can’t”,
and kept walking.

how I respond to that same request
is quite different;
but I hesitate to reveal it.
You see,
my left hand
isn’t supposed to know
what my right hand
is giving.*
