Like a Bird

 I watched
 as the tiny bird
 sunned herself,
 smack-dab in the center
 of my doormat.
 Why not?
 With its decorative bristles,
it probably is the most comfortable spot around.
 Her eyes were closed
and her face was pointed towards the sun.
 She basked peacefully
in the warmth of that moment,
thinking nothing of the bills I needed to pay
or the doctor’s visit I had later that day.
 She just sat there,
 contented,
 unafraid,
 and
 nourished
by the love of the sun.
 I never thought I’d pray
 to be
 just
 like
 a
 bird.
