Ode to Proverbs 18:2

I am a fool when
I am spouting my opinion as if it were fact.
I am a fool when
I fail to ask questions, seek wisdom and uncover truth.
I am a fool when
I turn away from reality to embrace that which is more convenient.
I am a fool when
I care more about what I say than about what I understand.
I am a fool when
I stop listening to voices that disagree with my own.
I am a fool when
I refuse debate because I know I am right.
I am a fool as
I travel the world with an immature outlook, that my way is the only way.
I am a fool
as I speak
as I judge
as I manipulate
my plan
my play
my only way.
Lord, save me
from being a fool.

“A fool takes no pleasure in understanding,
but only in expressing personal opinion.”
– Proverbs 18:2 (NRSV)
