The Wind Blows*

Let’s face it –
men gathered it
argued it
threw it out
or
included it.

Then,
when found,
other bits
and
pieces
were avoided
rejected
or suspected.

So I asked you, "What is a girl to believe?"

And you taught
and yelled
and charmed
and deceived;
and the loudest voices
scared me away
and the smartest voices
snuffed out my hope
but made me think,
“Well, at least now I know.”

Until I was slammed to the ground
once again
by the idol of knowing
that left me bereft and alone…

…where at least now
there is silence
and space for me to breathe
as I wait
for the Wind to blow.
