A Prayer Remembered

Her hair was a fluorescent pink I haven’t seen since the 80s; and her eyelashes were so long they made me think of a cat’s whiskers. I had no idea I was gawking until she excused herself from ringing me up to help the cashier next to her with a jammed cash drawer.  When she finally returned, I handed her the exact change for my order and said my customary, “Have a nice day.” She paused and then looked up at me from behind those sturdy black cat whiskers and exclaimed, “Wow! Polite, patient AND exact change – you must be an angel!” Her smile, that grew swiftly into a five-mile wide stretch of joy, warmed my heart…
…as I was leaving that terribly busy convenience store in West Virginia, I remembered my morning prayer: “God, help me to see you in everyone I meet today.” I suddenly heard myself laughing as I realized I finally have an answer for the next time a child asks me what God looks like: “God has fluorescent pink hair and eyelashes as long as the whiskers on a cat!”
