The Evening

The day is done
The work finished
Responsibilities met

Now we rest
In the quiet land of
Sofas and easy chairs
And quilts and cats

Dusk settles in beyond the walls
As an invitation to the blanket of night
The night that covers and soothes
The sores of the day
The hurts of work

Eyelids so heavy
Blink slowly back
The surrender to rest

The intensity of dreamland
Even waits in the shadows
Showing respect for the vessel
Allowing a space
As calm settles in

Blissfully I hear the rumble
Of the resting one beside me
My flight into nothingness
Looms near…

  1. There is real beauty in this one! Keep at it…my favorite line: “even waits in the shadows.” Diction, rhythm, image…all just right. Thanks!
